WATERBURY – Our Lady of Loreto parish has awarded five scholarships totaling $5,500 to four high school students and one college student this year.

The funds were donated to the parish specifically for use as scholarship awards.

All of those selected are actively involved in volunteer activities at Our Lady of Loreto, a key factor in their selection.

The scholarships were open to parishioners. Winners were selected on the basis of their grades, letters of recommendation from their principal or guidance counselor and their voluntary service to the parish.

The names of the winners follow:

Meghan Mitnick, daughter of Paul and Kristin Mitnick, was selected for the Adam and Lillian Bozzuto Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 and an Orrin J. Hubbard Scholarship in the amount of $500.

 Katerina Valente, daughter of Mary and Greg Valente, also was selected for the Adam and Lillian Bozzuto Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, as well as for the Ciriello Family Scholarship in the amount of $500.

Both girls are freshmen at Sacred Heart High School, where they take honors-level classes, are consistently on the honor roll and are active in the student government. Both also have been altar servers at the parish for more than six years and volunteer at many parish functions. Miss Mitnick ranks 14th of 85 in her class and carries a grade point average of 95.5.  Miss Valente’s GPA is 89.25. She is also on the cross-country team.  

Christopher Saunders, son of Gary and Carla Saunders, was selected for the Mr. and Mrs. Anonymous scholarship in the amount of $1,000. A junior at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, he is a Dean’s List student, and carries a 3.25 GPA. He is also on the baseball team. At the parish, he is a collector, helps with the Holy Joe’s Café Ministry and has assisted with Giving Tree activities.

Laura Bacchiocchi, a senior at Holy Cross High School, is the daughter of James and Louise Bacchiocchi. She was selected for the Orrin J. Hubbard scholarship in the amount of $1,000.  Her GPA is 88.8 and she ranks 45th of 165 in her class. She plans to attend Quinnipiac University in Hamden. Miss Bacchiocci is a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital, participates in a program at St. Mary Magdalen School and has been a religious education aide for two years at her parish.

Paige Calabrese, daughter of Dom and Dawn Calabrese, was chosen to receive the Beatrice Moran scholarship in the amount of $500. She is a senior at the Westover School, where she is a high-honors-with-distinction student. She is a member of the student government and a leader of the dance ensemble. She plans to attend Providence College in the fall. At the parish, she is a reader/lector.
