Students at St. Mary School in Newington hold candles of awareness that they lit while reading 10 facts about world hunger on Oct. 16 as part of the school’s participation in World Food Day.

The students had a rally in support of feeding the hungry in collaboration with Cross Catholic Outreach, the National Catholic Educational Association and students from colleges, universities, high schools, middle and elementary schools from across the United States, vowing to break the cycle of poverty by putting their faith into action.

The St. Mary students also collected enough money in donations to provide 1,200 meals for those in need. The event was organized by teachers Lori Oleasz and Karen Hurley.
