Jomar Rodriguez, left, explains a math concept to fellow students Mateusz Gola, Sophia Kowalker and Kaily Lesny during the recent Math Fair at Sacred Heart School in New Britain.
Because the annual event coincided with the beginning of Lent and Jubilee Year of Mercy, the school turned it into a faith-filled teachable moment.
The fifth-grade class of Dianne Kulinski, which sponsored the math fair, asked each participant to donate 25 cents or a nonperishable food item in keeping with the Lenten emphasis on almsgiving and on works of mercy of the jubilee year.
The donations were divided between a parish family facing a medical crisis and the Prudence Crandall Shelter for abused women. (Photo submitted)
