In the UK, a patient tested positive for Covid-19 for about 16 months until his death, according to the European Conference on Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. The longest known infection, as revealed by a study of the evolution of the virus
In immunosuppressed patients released on Friday, 22nd.
The identity of the patient has not been revealed, however, the first person to test positive for the virus was done in mid-2020. The patient remained positive in all tests (about 45) until his death, 505 days later, doctor Jaya Nebia told AFP International. . . , co-author of the study.
The European Congress of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, to be held from April 23-26, reports that the full research should be released soon.
The study looked at nine immunosuppressed patients with persistent virus infection between March 2020 and December 2021 and was conducted by researchers at King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
According to the study, tests have been positive for at least eight weeks, and two for more than a year. Of the nine patients, four died and four were cured. The ninth patient remained infected until early 2022, 412 days after the first positive test.
“Immune-compromised patients with chronic infection have little chance of survival, and new treatment strategies are urgently needed to stop infection,” Nebea warned.
In the study, the intention was to investigate mutations of the coronavirus in infected patients for several months.
“We wanted to describe the viral evolution of those individuals in which mutations can accumulate during their persistent infection,” the doctor said. “This is one of the hypotheses for the emergence of variants.”
According to estimates by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released on Friday, 38.5 million people were infected with Covid-19 in England between the end of April 2020 and mid-February 2022, which is 70% of the population.
