stmary altar

NEW BRITAIN — Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Bishop Peter A. Rosazza blesses and dedicates a new altar at St. Mary Church in New Britain as Father Israel Rivera, pastor, and Deacon Pedro Rivera, at right, assist on Jan. 1.

The altar, created by Canning Liturgical Arts and designed to complement the church’s high altar, is the first other permanent altar at St. Mary’s since fire ravaged the structure in January 1902.

Father Rivera said that because his parish is the mother church of New Britain and its surroundings, “the still-vibrant St. Mary's church is trying to bring back the tradition, history and beauty of past years.”
