The torch had traveled from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, where runners began to carry it in early October, to St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York and then to Hartford. Archbishop Henry J. Mansell was the principal celebrant of the Mass and Bishop Peter A. Rosazza preached the homily.

The federation comprises five groups, from Wallingford, West Haven, New Haven, Norwalk and Hartford.

At the Mass, members of parishes throughout the Archdiocese carried flags representing the diverse cultures where the Virgin Mary is loved. The Mass also included a mariachi band and the singing of traditional songs.
