FestaANSONIA – Holy Rosary Parish will sponsor Festa! 2013, its 46th annual Italian festival, from 5-10 p.m. Aug. 8-10 on the church grounds on Father Salemi Drive downtown. The festival is a celebration of Italian heritage as the parish recalls its roots as an immigrant congregation in the early 1900s.

The parish is located in the old Powe Street neighborhood that once housed a vibrant Italian enclave from 1900 to the redevelopment era of the 1960s.

The festival features such freshly prepared Italian foods as soffrito, lasagna, porchetta, pizza fritta, fried calamari and more. All are prepared in the parish hall kitchen by parishioners each day.

Dessert items are such Italian pastry treats as cannoli and sfogliatelle. Gelato made by Gelato Giuliana of New Haven also will be available.

Father Stephan Krugel, pastor, said he looks forward to this year’s event. He was a teen at Holy Rosary in the early years of the festival and volunteered then as have so many other parishioners.

“It’s great to be able to return to my home parish and find our festival to be such a vibrant part of the local community,” he said. “I look forward to working the booths again this year. This is a great event, and I invite our friends to join us this year for an exciting festa.”

The festival also offers games of skill and chance, an “Italian Marketplace” offering gifts and novelties, live musical entertainment each night and rides by Rainbow Amusements. Unlimited rides will be available on Aug. 8 by purchasing a bracelet.

Admission is free. Information is available at www.holyrosaryfestival.com.
