cemetery mass web

Msgr. Daniel Plocharczyk, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in New Britain, holding microphone, leads thousands in prayer during a procession on Nov. 1, All Saints Day, at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

With him are Deacon Jacek Muszynski, left; Father Dariusz Gosciniak, pastor of Holy Cross Parish in New Britain; and Father Stanislaw Dudek.

In the Polish tradition, Msgr. Plocharczyk and Father Gosciniak led an annual procession from St. Lucian’s Residence to the cemetery for the outdoor Mass on All Saints Day.

The priests, parishioners, church and civic groups, choirs and visitors sang hymns and prayed along the way.

Also according to tradition, many visitors decorated the graves of deceased family members or friends with flowers and candles, which remained lit and flickered into the night and next day, All Souls Day.
