WESTON, Vt. – Sister Joan (Joseph Ann) Sirtowt, 65, of Weston, Vt., died June 11 in Waterbury after a brief illness.

She was born on June 2, 1945, in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Joseph Francis and Anna (Tenis) Sirtowt. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education from St. John’s University, studied educational media at Fairfield University and earned her master’s degree in theology from St. Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt.

She was the originator of Joanie’s Bait Box, which operated on Spring Street in Naugatuck for more than 30 years.

She entered the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk in Blue Point, N.Y., in 1963. She taught in Stamford and at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hartford; was the director of religious education for a parish in Swanton, Vt., for 25 years; and was also employed by Vermont Associates in St. Albans, Vt., and Stewart Property Management in Springfield, Vt.

She leaves a sister, Roseceil Rader of Naugatuck; numerous cousins; and her religious community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 17 at St. Mary Church in Naugatuck. Burial followed in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck.
