WEST HARTFORD – Sister Mary Austin Close of the Sisters of Mercy died on Aug. 15, 2010, two months short of her 100th birthday.

She was born in New Haven and taught in the West Haven school system before entering the Sisters of Mercy in 1937.

After professing her vows in 1940, she taught at Sacred Heart and St. Francis schools in New Haven, Sacred Heart School in Waterbury, St. Mary in Milford and the former Mount St. Joseph Academy in West Hartford.

Predeceased by five siblings, she leaves many nieces, nephews, friends and the Mercy community.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Aug. 18 in the chapel of St. Mary Home in West Hartford.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery in West Hartford.
