obit-Thuer_WilliamBLOOMFIELD – Father William J. Thuer, 89, of the Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin Residence, died on April 21, 2011.

He was born June 23, 1921, in Hartford, the son of the late William O. and Bridget Elizabeth (Sullivan) Thuer. He graduated from St. Michael’s School in Hartford and St. Thomas Preparatory School in Bloomfield before beginning his studies for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. He finished his studies at St. Bernard’s Seminary in Rochester, N.Y.

He was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1946, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, by then-Bishop Henry J. O’Brien.

Father Thuer began his ministry as a professor at St. Thomas Seminary from 1946-53. He then went on to assist from 1953-58 at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Hamden, from 1958-71 at Immaculate Conception Parish in Waterbury and from 1971-74 at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Waterbury. He then was a priest in residence at St. Elizabeth Parish in Branford.

In 1976, Father Thuer was appointed to his first pastorate at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. In 1988, he became Pastor at St. Patrick Parish in Collinsville, where he served until his retirement in 1996.

Archbishop Henry J. Mansell celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial on April 26 in the chapel of St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. Burial was in the family plot at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield.
