A missile fired at Yemen has killed at least 17 people

Yemen’s Houthi rebels fired at least 17 people on Saturday in a Yemeni government – controlled city, officials say.

Meanwhile, a U.S. ambassador to Yemen accused the rebels of failing to bring peace to the war-torn country.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.

At least 17 people were killed and at least five were injured in what became known as the attack, according to Information Minister Moymar al-Iriani. He added that all the victims were civilians.

He urged the United Nations and the United States to condemn the attack, saying it was a war crime.

There is no comment from the Houthi rebels at this time.

State news agency Sabah reported that the rebels fired a drone loaded with explosives after the missile attack. He said the drone destroyed two ambulances that came to the area to take the injured to hospitals.

Since February, Houthi rebels, with the support of Iran, have sought to seize control of the city of Marib from the country’s internationally recognized government, trying to end their dominance in Yemen’s northern region.

But they did not make significant progress and suffered heavy losses amid fierce opposition from government forces with the help of the Saudi-led coalition.

Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2014, forcing the Houthis to cross the northern part of the country, seize the capital Sanaa and deport an internationally recognized government.

The Saudi-led coalition entered the war on behalf of the government the following year. These conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 130,000 people and caused the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
