Brazilians forget to redeem billions in the lottery; Check the values

Winning the lottery is the dream of most people in Brazil. Looking at this, the thought of winning the lottery and not withdrawing money seems crazy, right? But it is not. To give you an idea, in the last 7 years, Brazilians have failed to draw about R$2.5 billion in lottery prizes from cashier. That is, an average of 359 million Brazilian reals per year. Thus, the money stopped making millions. Below, check out the surprising numbers.

To give you an idea, in 2021 the highest amount without drawing a lottery was R$587 million. That is, the amount is almost double what was not withdrawn in previous years. While in 2015, R$301 million was discontinued, in 2018, R$332 million remained.

According to the rules of the legislation, the winner of any prize in any Caixa lottery has up to 90 days to get a refund. And if it doesn’t, the money goes to Fies (Student Funding Fund).

In view of this, the amount of R$2.513.656 billion in prizes not drawn out by winners between 2015 and 2021 will yield R$320 million annually. This is obvious, if it is invested in the electronic treasury at the current interest rate of 12.75% per annum.

In the case of savings, the lottery sums will produce R$ 155 million per year – a return of 6.17% per annum, including 0.5% per month plus the reference price.

In 2022, the level of forgotten values in the lottery is still high. In the first four months of 2022 alone, about R$108 million in prizes were not withdrawn. That is about 27.1 million R$ per month, of which 42.2 million R$ in April alone.
