JAVA, Indonesia – A huge cloud of ash was created by the eruption of a volcano on the island of Java, Indonesia. A local resident posted a video of the ash-covered sky of Mount Semeru as people ran to flee the scene. see below:
Rescue teams are on their way to the affected area. According to the local news agency, Antara, a heavy fall of volcanic ash is blocking the sun’s rays in two local areas.
A watchdog agency issued a warning to airlines of the presence of an ash cloud rising to 15,000 metres.
The volcano, at 3,676 meters above sea level, had previously erupted in January of this year.
Semeru, also known as “The Great Mountain,” is the highest peak on the island and is known for volcanic activity. Java is located in the “Pacific Circle of Fire”, a region of the planet where tectonic plates meet and volcanic eruptions and earthquakes become a reality.
Local news on Kompas TV reported that a bridge collapsed and several homes were buried under volcanic debris, but it was not clear if anyone was injured.
The head of Lumagang district, Thorikul Haq, said the volcano has been active since Friday.
– Now it’s dark in the villages, he said in a television interview. “We don’t know if it’s cold or hot lava,” he added. According to him, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
