Friends and authorities confirmed Tuesday that the boy’s parents, Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35, were among the eight dead in the tragedy.

“At two years old, Aiden was left in an unimaginable situation: he grew up without his parents,” Irina Colon wrote on a GoFundMe account she created for the family.

Irina Colon helped take care of the baby until the family was found. Aiden is now in the care of his maternal grandparents.. The virtual crowdfunding Colon set up to help the family had already raised more than $2 million (about 11 million R$) as of Wednesday morning (6).

Irina McCarthy’s childhood friend, Angela Villa, described her as a cheerful, friendly person and “kind of tomboy” who loves to dress up.

“She definitely had her own style, which I’ve always admired,” Villa said in a short interview with the Associated Press news agency.
