The family of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is estimated to be worth between $ 1 billion and $ 2 billion, the United States has said, despite efforts to isolate the ruler due to the civil war.

In a statement requested by Congress, the State Department said it could only provide a “false estimate” that the Assads were believed to possess assets under fictitious names or through opaque rights arrangements.

Forbes points out that Rubens Menin of MRV lost $ 1 billion a year

“The estimated net worth of the Assad family is usually between $ 1 billion and $ 2 billion, based on information from open source,” the report said in a statement.

Citing NGOs and media reports, Assad said, “they run a complex support system, which includes shell companies and corporate shells, which act as a tool to access financial resources for the regime.”

The assessment includes the president’s wife, brother, sister, cousins and uncle, most of whom have been targeted by U.S. sanctions. The State Department said there was insufficient information on the net worth of the 17-year-old, who is the president’s three children.

The U.S. Congress is pushing for sanctions to prevent Assad from returning to business as usual, as his forces regain control of much of Syria after a decade-long war that has killed nearly half a million people.
