Mike Pompeo, the former Secretary of State during Donald Trump’s presidency, said during his visit to the island that the United States should diplomatically recognize “independence and sovereignty” in Taiwan.

Although Washington wants to maintain its relationship with Beijing as a sovereign government, Pompeo, one of China’s former president’s hardliners, said “you can not continue to ignore, avoid or treat it secondarily” in granting diplomatic recognition to Taiwan. .

“The US government must take immediate and necessary long-term action to do the right and transparent thing in granting diplomatic recognition to the Republic of China as an independent and sovereign nation,” he said.

The Republic of China is the official name of Taiwan, as opposed to the People’s Republic of China, which is ruled by the Communist Party in Beijing.

At the end of China’s civil war, the defeated nationalist group fled to Taiwan in 1949, but remained the legitimate government of the entire country.

For a long time, a section of the international community maintained diplomatic relations with Taipei instead of Beijing, but now only 15 countries have not officially recognized Communist China.

Despite being Taiwan’s most important ally and its main arms supplier, the US government took this step in 1979.

Pompeo’s visit comes amid growing tensions over the democratically governed island, which Beijing considers its own territory, which will one day be recaptured, including forcibly if necessary.
